and functions within
- Rider promotions designed
to new riders via clinics and "introduce a friend" to racing

and September.
- Have WCA points series
updated after each race within 3 days after the race
- Ideas to discuss in 2003
as 2 year goals:

u-23 riders to go to nationals
- junior WCA team
- annual report
- Annual Event
Narrative:
WCA is in the position--and
has considerable momentum--to provide excellent race events for
Wisconsin riders. In 2002, the leadership change created opportunities
for improvement and inovation, some of which happened, some of which
did not happen in 2002 due to lack of follow through.
A few question I'd like
to ask the board is why does WCA exist?
- To provide local riders
with a race series?
- To provide promoters
with a venue within which to place their own races (WCA series)?
- To be a resource for
new riders?
- To provide answers and
guidance to riders and promoters that will further develop our
sport?
- Other?
I raise the above questions
as it strikes me that the board needs to agree on what WCA is to
be doing. It helps to create a plan if there is agreement on why
we exist; it helps in setting goals to meet the basic tenets of
the organization.
It is my feeling that some
new initiatives can improve racing in Wisconsin but agreed upon
and planned a year in advance. Particularly, planning must take
into account financial resources to create the changes. Sponsor
development is a 12-18 month process therefore, planning must begin
now to ensure success in 2003.
WCA must also be sure to
deliver on its promises: have timely updates on the website; a website
that is easy to navigate, quality prizes, and a year end event that
recognizes the efforts of promoters, volunteers and the riders who
make up our sport.
How can we do this in 2003?
We must upgrade our internal capacity via better organization, planning
and development work. Next steps could include:
- Meeting with board for
input and feedback sometime in August or September 2002
- Refinement of objectives
and goals for 2003, including setting financial targets for fund
raising
- Timeline for meeting
objectives
- Developing clear communications
among board members and the racers and promoters
- Appointment by 9/1/02
of volunteers or paid professionals to carry out objectives
- Accountability with WCA
members
The above is my personal
interpretation of a plan to help WCA better serve Wisconsin promoters
and riders and the sport of cycling. Feedback and comments are welcome
and this document is meant to be a working one with input from other
board members, WCA and others who have interest in WCA.
