What's This I've Been Hearing About WCA Masters Categories?

The WCA Board of Directors discussed masters categories at its open meeting in Lake Mills last month. The purpose for the discussion was to clarify how WCA can recognize riders in State Championship age categories according to USCF category specifications. Specifically, WCA has not consistently recognized a winner in the Masters 35, 45, 55 categories per USCF rules (we did this year, but need to publicize the categories better).

For 2004, WCA is obligated to run a road race championship for 30+, 35+, 45+, 55+, 60+, and for women, 35+ and 45+. The State Criterium Championships are optional when it comes to age group categories. At our option, we may run Criterium Championships for every five year category, as at Nationals.

WCA will work with promoters of state championship events to:
a) make sure that riders know how they will be scored
b) clarify with riders what age group they are eligible to win the state championship in (i.e., a 38 year old rider is eligible in the 35-39 year old class)
c) clarify with riders in combined fields(if we decide to run additional restricted categories at state championships) (i.e., 30/40+) that they will win their masters age group, per USCF categories, but are still eligible to win overall prize money if they place high. For example, a 38 year old rider is 1st in the 35-39 State Championship class, and 3rd overall in a combined field. That rider wins the 35-39 year old State Championship medal and the prize for 3rd place in the combined field. Example #2: The 38 year old rider comes in 1st overall in the combined field. He wins the 35-39 year old State Championship--someone else is first in the 30-34 division--and 1st place prize money).
d) this applies only to State Championship events.
e) WCA may be able to offer WCA Series points in championships, depending upon the categories we choose to run. This decision has yet to be made.

Since the board was on the topic of masters categories, the question was put to the riders present of "do the current WCA masters categories serve the masters population well?" As one could imagine, there were a lot of opinions. The board decided that all masters riders should have the chance to voice their opinion about WCA masters categories and is designing a questionaire for the website. Timeframe for some rider feedback is the latter part of September.

Rider Feedback RESULTS: Masters Classes to Remain As Is

November 11, 2003

This survey was undertaken because a number of riders voiced concern about age classifications. The Board decided that no change should be made without an opportunity to hear from everyone. We thank all those who took the time to vote and to share their opinions. The voting is now over, and we have gotten a good response. Of 244 votes cast, 143 respondents favor retaining the current age-class divisions of 30+ and 40+. There was clearly no mandate for change, so points will be scored for 30+, 40+, and 50+ classes, as in 2003. We received a number of thoughtful comments.

For retaining the status quo:

"Those of us younger than 35 would only do one race or none at all"

"If they go to 35/45 it would allow me to only do one race per event, thereby making it easier for me to decide to stay home & train"

"Unless there is a replacement race for the 20% of the racers aged 30 to 34, our sport may suffer…eliminating the possibility of a double for 20% of the entrants not only represents a financial challenge for the promoters, but also represents a significant loss to this group of racers."

"There is a history of these cats…and most riders have found their niche in one or the other."

"The Masters categories start at age 30 for nationals, why would we change?"

"If you change it to 35+ it will be similar to Minnesota, so I (and a bunch of others in this area) will have little reason to travel to races in southeastern Wisconsin"

"Voted for the 30+ and 40+ only because I am hoping it will keep the 50+ age category separate"

"If it's not broke don't fix it! What will be accomplished by changing the age group? Smaller masters fields, less revenue for promoters"

In favor of change

"I voted for the 35+ & 45+ categories. I'm a 47 year old who races both cat 4 and masters 40+. This change would make the races much more even and fun in terms of competition. "

"It would be better to align ourselves with what's (more and more)
common elsewhere, i.e. 35+ & 45+."

The Return of the Cowgirls

November, 11, 2003

The only cow-themed team in the American peloton is back. America's Dairyland, the team with the bovine bikes is ready for 2004 with fresh faces and returning talent. "The team was created in 2002 for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, and they loved the promotion," said Rebecca Loney, team manager.

Returning to the team is Rachel Eichers, Jamie Surges and Erica Johnson. New riders include 2000 WCA champion Julie Schmitt, Anna Dierking, and Julie Tatar. Waterford Precision Cycles returns as the frame supplier for the team.

"One of our team goals is to visit schools and talk to the kids about how to eat well and encourage them to keep exercising. Each of the riders will visit a school next spring, so all of us work hard to do our part for the sponsor, in addition to racing," noted Loney.
