Good Time to Renew!

January 6, 2006

Renew your license now and avoid the spring rush. You'll be sure to have a correct license in hand when the season starts. The fastest and most reliable method is to renew online at www.usacycling.org. Click on "My USA Cycling".

Some things to keep in mind:

Club: If there is no club listed on your license, you are an unattached rider and ineligible to wear team uniforms. Renewal is the only time you can change clubs without a release from your old club. Check with your team manager to be sure that your club has renewed its membership!

Category: If you are ready for an upgrade (or downgrade), click on the link at the bottom of the page and type in your request and resume.

Citizenship: Proof of citizenship is required for National Championships.

Color: 2006 licenses will have a green stripe.

Once you receive your license in the mail check it over carefully. If anything is incorrect, you may obtain a free reissue within 30 days of the time you purchased it. After 30 days, there is a $15 charge. To correct errors, please contact Heidi Mingesz, wcatech@earthlink.net.

Proof that Sponsorship Really Works!

December 25, 2005

GPresumably, many sponsors choose to promote their goods or services via a cycling team because they want to get their product in front of a buying audience in a novel way.

It dawned on this writer that there is evidence of sponsorship working in my house. Sitting here sipping a cup of coffee from the Saeco Vienna Deluxe coffee machine got me thinking about how, exactly, does sponsorship impact buying decisions? What else did I buy because of the company's support of cycling? I had to look no farther than my feet for a clue. The pink quark shoes were a "must have" because they go with my kit. Then there's my Festina watch with the yellow face I had to have. My rudy project sunglasses that I paid retail for (owch) and the coffee I'm drinking from my Saeco Vienna Deluxe? Alterra. Breakfast? A few slices of Natural Ovens Sunny Millet bread, toasted of course washed down with a big glass of milk. Also discovered in the cupboard: Colavita olive oil and vinegar. I used to buy a different brand of olive oil but I think I'm subconsciously choosing to support a company that supports cycling.

I never used to eat jelly beans...until those little sample packets started showing up at races. I have fond memories of taking a huge box of jelly bellys to Easter two years ago and making gross combos with my 86 year old grandfather. He loved them as much as I did. And chamois cream? Udderly Smooth. If it's good enough for a cow's you-know-what, it's good enough for my chamois. A lot cheaper than the "real" chamois stuff too. This sponsorship loyalty works with UCI teams too. I've been to the Baleric Isles which has fantastic cycling and supports a UCI team. I'd like to take a Domina Vacanze too...someday.

Conversely, just as sponsors come and go I no longer drink Diet Rite soda. I was miffed that they dumped their cycling promotion. I won't buy products by Con Agra (who dumpd the Women's Challenge Race two years ago) either. No more tater tots for this cat. And here's some companies I think should sponsor a team: Macintosh, United Airlines, UPS (whoa, can you imagine brown kits?), Trader Joes, Banfi (my favorite red wine) and Mazda.

Cycling Sponsorship really works. What's in YOUR house?

Dopers Suck Coffee to Help Send Juniors to World Cross in 06…

December 11, 2005

Good old Jittery Joes has taken on the dopers by selling coffee under the “Dopers Suck” label. Jittery Joes coffee already funds the team of the same name, but now the coffee company has partnered with DopersSuck.com to create a new label. Proceeds of this coffee will support getting juniors to the World Cyclocross championships in 2006. So when buying this stuff think about Kaitlyn Antonneau or Bjorn Selander and other riders who might need a hand in '06.

You can order by clicking here: http://doperssuck.com.

ATTENTION Bike Riders of Wisconsin!

December 6, 2005

The 5th annual Cronometro bike swap is quickly approaching on Saturday January 14th, 2006 in Madison. The UW cycling club would like to sell your old gear to help keep UW cyclists racing throughout the Midwest in collegiate cycling. As a fundraising effort, we will be having a table at the swap meet with all proceeds from the table going directly to the UW cycling club. The UW cycling club’s mission is to provide all UW students a friendly atmosphere to pursue cycling, whether just riding around town or racing each week. The club consistently has over 50 racers each spring and fall traveling around the Midwest conference. Due to increasing costs, the budget given to the club will be limited in coming years, endangering the ability for all racers to travel to races.

We would love to use your old gear for this cause. All proceeds go directly to the UW cycling club’s budget which in turn will insure that all student athletes are able to participate and get to races in the conference. If you would like to donate gear, please contact Bryan at bs8930@hotmail.com.

And don’t forget that even if you can’t donate gear, we already have some great gear which MUST BE SOLD! Come to the Cronometro swap, and check out our table!

Thank you for your support of collegiate cycling,

UW Cycling Club

WCA Hits Record Number of Licensed Riders

November 8, 2005

As of today Wisconsin had 723 licensed USCF riders, up from 618 last year!! That’s great news. Let’s see at least 250 of you at the Annual Dinner! Seriously, this is good news in that $10 of every license sold to a WI rider is rebated back to WCA. WCA plows that money into our programs, so we can offer state champion jerseys, timely results, regular news and features on our website and the best racing in the country. Truly, Wisconsin is the envy of many a state. That’s something to celebrate on November 19 at the dinner!

WCA Board Invitation to the Wisconsin Cup Awards Dinner

October 27, 2005

Bob Roll acting as podium boy giving Rachel Eichers her Wisconsin Cup Trophy at the 04 awards dinner.

If you attended the dinner in 2004, you'll receive a flyer via snail mail about the annual dinner. If you are new to WCA or have never attended the event, please click here to view the flyer and reservation form. The date is Saturday, NOVEMBER 19 at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

What happens at the dinner? For starters, we polish off some really good beer, supplied by WCA (kiddie cocktails for juniors, of course). Then we laugh at each other in street clothes, bid on silent auction items, and after that we recognize the top three riders in every category. The actual "Wisconsin Cup" traveling trophy is handed out to the main category winners with the winner's name permanently inscribed on the cup. The winner gets to keep the cup for a year, so this event is a "passing of the torch" so to speak.

As last year, we have some great items in a silent auction, the proceeds of which are used to offset the Wisconsin Cup series. The annual doorprize/schwag-toss is a go, and the schwag is as good as ever. Last year we had Bob Roll as the guest speaker. He's a tough act to follow, but we have invited a very well known rider to attend who'll have some great stories to tell. As of this posting the guest speaker is working on a schedule change to enable him to be in Milwaukee, so we'll let you know when we get confirmation.

It's a relaxing event in a great venue and everyone is welcome. Bring your spouse and kids! Seating is limited (last year we sold out), and tickets must be purchased in advance. So come on Velocity, Trocodero, CZ Velo, PCW, Spring Street, Endeavour, One Percent More, CVC, Brazen Dropouts, LAPT, IS CORP, Team WI, Michaels, and the rest of you....get your table together, and I'll see you on the 19th in Milwaukee!

Warm regards,

Rebecca Anderson
WCA President

Hampshire Cycle Club Honors Matt Wittig

October 27, 2005

Matt Wittig began racing with Hampshire Cycle Club when he was still in high school and brought enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the club. This year, the racing community lost Matt as a result of injuries suffered at Hampshire's Muskego Park Race. As a result of this and us having introduced Matt to bike racing, we have decided to rename all future editions of this race as "The Matt Wittig Memorial Race". As a small token of our appreciation to Matt as a person, Hampshire Cycle Club contributed $1200 to the Matt Wittig Scholarship – a majority of this contribution came from the CAT 3 entry fees from the May 7th bike race at Muskego Park.

Nominations Open

November 8, 2005

Have you had that itch to just pick up the phone and ask to serve on the board of directors of a non-profit agency? Now’s your chance. To learn more about serving on the board send an email to WCA President, Rebecca Anderson: Rebecca@tds.net.

Cyclists Campaigning to Legalize the “Rolling Stop”

November 8, 2005

No tickets yet for the annual dinner? You have until Monday to download the order form here.
The annual dinner is the time to crown the Wisconsin Cup Champions and enjoy the very fine company of your fellow riders. Who knew that some of them could be so entertaining? It’s amazing what you can find out at the WCA dinner. Did you know that John Van Susteran is a long time barbershop quartet singer? And Billy Jones does Elvis impersonations on his “spring training trip” to make extra money? And Rebecca Anderson changes oil at Valvoline on Tuesday nights for extra money? If you believe that, you are truly living a sheltered life. But truly, you need to be at the dinner to celebrate the year we had. The food is awesome and well worth the $30. So get your order in stat.

Velo Trocadero Halloween Race

November 1, 2005

The second annual Washington Park Halloween Cyclocross Race was held under blue skies and 60 degree temps. This race was the fifth of eight races in the Wisconsin Cycling Association cyclocross series. The race is put on by the Velo Trocadero cycling squad as a fundraiser for the team and also supports the WCA and the Matt Wittig Memorial Fund (Matt was a very talented and kind racer who was killed in a crash earlier this year). The race went without a hitch and saw the largest number of racers in any Wisconsin Cyclocrosss race to date with 194 racers. Many of the
194 racers were donned in Halloween costume.

The Mens A race was won by Tyler Wren of The Colavita Cycling Team, followed by Brian Conant of Revolution in second, and Bobby Williamson in third. The Womens A race had Kristin Wentworth of Nova/IS Corp in first and Patti Kauffman from Team Wisconsin in second, followed by 15-year-old Sam Schneider of the Endeavor team in third.

The race is a challenging course with a hill run up and a bumpy lunar landscape section which took it out of you lap after lap. Washington Park, where the race was held, was laid out by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who also built New York's famed Central Park. Milwaukee County Parks System has granted us permission to use this wonderful green space, and we thank them tremendously. We would also be nowhere without the generous support of our sponsors; thanks to Trocadero, Wheel & Sprocket, Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Center, O’Briens Pub, The Nomad, Acclivius Software, The Bike Federation of Wisconsin, and our latest major sponsor, Brookstone Homes.

Other winners were: Matt Brandt-Mens B (also winner of the Junior Boys 15-18), Amy Pikalek-Womens B, Ben Lund-Masters 30+, Bob Rozman-Masters-40+, Glen Jones-Masters 50+, Richard Janish-Mens C, Holly Klug-Womens C, Matt Brandt-Juniors.

Congratulations to all racers and thanks for making this the biggest cyclocross race of the season so far. Let’s break the 200 rider mark at Estabrook Park (WCA-Cyclocross Race # 6) next Sunday, November 6th.

See you there!

Jeff Littman Recovering

September 20, 2005

Jeff Littman (Team Wisconsin and patron of Wisconsin cycling) has had surgery to repair his broken ribs and injuries to his lungs. He is still in ICU at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee and will not be able to receive visitors until next week. Word is that his tiger tattoos came out of the crash just fine and the medical staff are keenly aware that cyclists are not *normal* patients and a little pain is nothing to them. They are keeping him sedated a day to make sure he doesn’t try to leave when they aren’t looking.

Many have asked if they could send Jeff flowers or gifts and while this is appreciated, a gift to the University of Wisconsin Scholarship - Matt Wittig Cycling Scholarship fund would be a touching way to show your support. To do that, click on https://www.uwfoundation.wisc.edu/giving/giving2.nsf/jsCheck Click on “other” in the gift designation and add “Matt Wittig Cycling Scholarship” in the area designated for detailed instructions for directing your gift. A receipt will be mailed to you and Jeff will know of your thoughtfulness.

Also, check out the information on www.heatherhaviland.com for further updates and insightful information on Camp Littmann. Lastly, there will be a full size cut out of Jeff from his body building days that you can visit (as well as get great cycling and triathlon gear) at www.transitioncycle.com in Pewaukee.

Our thanks to Bill Ochowicz for his timely updates. WCA sends all good wishes to Jeff and Healther.
