UW
Cycling's "Tour Baby" Cancelled
from Ashley
Simon, Vice President UW Cycling Club: "Between the low
ticket sales, bad weather, and Obama at the Kohl Center, it's in
the club's best interest to cancel the event. It is very disheartening
for those that have put countless hours into the event. For those
of you that were planning on coming, I thank you for supporting
our club."
Clif
Bar Wrappers Worth Cash!
Clif Bar is partnering
with TerraCycle to reduce the number of energy bar wrappers in landfills.
The Wrapper Brigade program asks us to collect energy bar wrappers
(any brand), send them in, and receive 2 cents apiece for a charity
that we choose. The collected wrappers will be recycled into outdoor
products like backpacks. If you're interested, sign up for Wrapper
Brigade by visiting: http://www.terracycle.net/brigades.
There is no cost to participate. Participants get four collection bags
that
hold 200 energy bar wrappers each. You simply mail the collection bags
back to TerraCycle and designate the charity you want to support. All
shipping costs are covered by the program to encourage people to
collect
as many wrappers as possible.
WCA will figure out how to collect wrappers at races and send the
funds to the Matt Wittig Memorial Foundation. If someone would like
to assist, please contact: becx6132@gmail.com.

Brian Matter Celebrates Cycling Season; PCW Cycling Changes Name
Milwaukee,
WI – Enduring a fierce battle with Wisconsin’s infamous
wintry mix on Sunday, PCW Cycling’s Brian Matter of Sheboygan,
WI, culminated his 2007 cycling season with a 2nd place (Pro 1/2/3)
finish at the Wisconsin Cycling Association’s (WCA) Cyclocross
Championships in Hales Corners. Matter’s Silver victory caps
a season of frequent visits to the awards podium. Accomplishments
in 2007 include Wisconsin Off Road Series (WORS) Marathon Champion,
USA Cycling 24 Hour Mountain Bike National Champion, 1st in the
18th Annual Ice Man Cometh Challenge, 2nd in the WORS Elite Overall
Series, 2nd in Michigan’s Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic,
2nd in the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40, and 3rd in the WCA Cyclocross
Point Series.
“I was close to winning another
Triple Crown this year…second at both Ore to Shore and Fat
Tire, and first at Iceman,” says Matter. “We’ll
see what we can do in 2008.”
Matter’s wife, Andrea, placed
9th in Sunday’s competition, her first Pro Women’s Race.
Other PCW Cycling team members posting top finishes at WCA’s

Milwaukee and Sheboygan-based PCW Cycling
will sport a new look and name in 2008. Gear Grinder Cycling, as
PCW Cycling will be known in the new season, will maintain the club’s
philosophy of promoting all facets of cycling, with an emphasis
on mountain biking, road bike, triathlons and cyclocross racing,
but will also extend its name to the Gear Grinder brand of cycling-inspired
apparel for consumers’ active lifestyles. Equally important
to supporting the club and keeping the team competitive, the Gear
Grinder brand, launching in first quarter of 2008, will provide
resources to organizations that utilize the bicycle to inspire and
educate our youth, provide opportunities for underprivileged children,
protect the environment, and promote health and wellness.
“The Gear Grinder brand will enable
us to strengthen our team while benefiting our communities,”
says Gear Grinder Cycling team leader Paul Weaver. “A portion
of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to a worthy cycling-affiliated
organization. We each have a responsibility to give back more than
we take out.”

“Devil Take the Hindmost” Cyclocross Race
Washington Park on Sunday November
11 @ 10am
Devil take the Hindmost is also known
as “Miss and Out,” which is at every lap on our modified

by drawing numbers (to keep things as fair and as random as possible).

We will run as many heats as needed,
and the top two or three riders will move on to the Angel Category.
The rest of the riders who were not pulled will move on to the Mere
Mortal Category. The pulled riders will move on to the Devil Category.
There will then be a final race in each category to determine the
overall winners in each category.
Rumor has it we might “find”

Flying Viking Cross race to raise funds to send Wisconsin racers
to Cyclocross Nationals
On Sunday, November 11 Midwest cyclocross
racers will be able to try out a new race course in Stoughton, Wisconsin
while helping out deserving athletes looking to attend Nationals.
The Flying Viking Cross race held at Mandt Park in Stoughton will
offer racers a fast, flat course with twists and turns and some
fun surprises. All profits from the race will be used to ensure
that the best Wisconsin cross racers can afford the trip to Kansas
City for Nationals. In addition, this race will also serve as the
Wisconsin Singlespeed Cyclocross Championship.
With no races scheduled in the Wisconsin
Cycling Association series as well as no race in the Chicago Cross
Cup racers in the region were looking for an event to keep their
motivation and fitness high heading into December. Local race promoters
Renee Callaway and John Ericsson saw an opportunity for both a new
venue and a chance to help out some deserving racers. “I saw
this opening in the race calendar as a perfect opportunity to make
a difference for the local cross community by offering a high quality
event while also raising funds to help out some of our best female
and male racers interested in attending Nationals,” says Renee
Callaway of madcross.org.
In addition to a new, fun course and
some great prizes, racers will be able to enjoy a free post-race
burrito while they hang around and cheer on racers in the afternoon.
For more information on the race and to see a flyer visit www.madcross.org.
Haven't Signed up for the Annual Dinner on November 3?
There are no "day of sales"
for the dinner as we have to put the head count in a few days before
the event. For those of you without a calendar, that would be October
31 which is only 3 days after Haloween cross. If you are jammed
for time but can bring a check to the dinner, please send Amy Miller
an email with how many people you'd like to bring and then, and
only then, can you pay at the door. But we prefer not to be scrambling
at the last minute because it cuts into our time at happy hour.
More happy, less scrambling, that's our motto. Amy's email: avasimon@wi.rr.com.
As always, we'll have tons of great door prizes, and unless you
are Jerry Pearce and don't get a door prize for 12 years, most people
walk away with a door prize. *(sorry Jerry, maybe '07 is YOUR year!)
The annual awards dinner is set for
Saturday, November 3 at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. Happy hour
starts at 6pm at the MAC; look for room location in the lobby of
the MAC. Dinner is at 7, awards at 7:45. See flyer
for more information.

for people to try as well.
Why
Cyclists Need to Become Advocates
There are a lot of cycling groups around
the country working hard to make our cities and towns safer places
to ride a bicycle. These groups, like the Bicycle Federation of
Wisconsin and others are always looking for new members and contributions
to keep their efforts going. If you haven’t become a member of Bike
Fed yet, and you ride a bicycle, you need to get on the bus. Click
on the link below to gain perspective on just how important advocates
are in bicycles gaining wider acceptance. While we’re out riding
our bikes, the advocates are at city hall and at the State Capitol
speaking on our behalf.
As the story illustrates, a stricken
cyclist was treated poorly and out-numbered by two motorists (one
a cop). Cyclists alone are ineffective as advocates, but by pooling
our resources and lending our voice and funds to groups like Bike
Fed we can be at the table, voices raised and even better, voices
heard. Thanks for reading and if by the end of the article you haven’t
joined Bike Fed yet then I sincerely hope you do not meet the lady
in the story thus finding out the hard way just exactly why it’s
good to have advocates speaking for us. –R. Anderson

State
TT Championship Report
The Wisconsin State Time Trial Championship,
hosted by Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Cycling Team, was held this
past Saturday in Kansasville near the Bong State Recreational Area.
With temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 80’s, overcast
skies and little wind, the stage was set for some fast times on
the 40 kilometer course, (2 laps).
Riders were encouraged to pre-register
on-line using Sports Base Online. Those that pre-registered saved
$7 on the entry fee, had a faster check-in at the registration table,
were automatically entered into a raffle (which included a wheel
set, tires, and pump) and most importantly, locked in the rider’s
start time. The start times were then posted and updated periodically
on the Team Wheaton web site, www.team-wisconsin.com,
which received almost 600 hits during the week before the race.
134 riders took advantage of the on-line registration, which was
far more than the 29 who registered Saturday.
Behind the scenes, Team Wheaton was
able to assign rider start times, bib numbers, pre-print rider release
forms for quick check-in, and guaranty an on-time start for the
event. Brian Carlson, Race Director for the event, indicated that
it was a no-brainer to offer on-line registration, and also added,
“By having such a high percentage of riders pre-registered,
it allowed us to give the officials an accurate start list for the
first 120+ riders, allowing for a smooth event throughout the day.”
The unofficial course record coming
into Saturday was 52 min 8 seconds. It didn’t take long for
the first riders to turn in sub 1-hour times. In fact Craig Gartland
of Brazen Dropouts, a Madison based cycling team, who started 10th,
recorded a time of 54 min 6 seconds, an average speed of just over
27 mph. Craig’s time didn’t stand long, as 4 minutes
later Denny Yunk of CZ Velo, a Waukesha based cycling team, crossed
in 51 min 35 sec, averaging a blazing 28.5 mph and setting a new
course record.
The top woman was Julie Foertsch of
America’s Dairyland Cycling Team with a recorded time of 56
min 8 sec, just over a 26 mph average.
Junior’s and several other category
riders competed on the 20-kilometer course, which was one lap around
the Bong State Recreational Area. The 20k riders were lead by junior
rider Dave Hackworthy of Wisconsin based IS Corp Cycling Team. Dave’s
time was 26:11, an average speed of just over 28 mph.
Overall 73 riders broke the one-hour
mark.
For complete results visit Wheaton Franciscan
Healthcare Cycling Team web site at: www.team-wisconsin.com.
As the officials turned in the riders
finish times, Team Wheaton posted them to a spreadsheet on their
laptop. With the last rider crossing the finish line around 12:15
PM it was a perfect time for Team Wheaton to do the drawing for
the raffle prizes. With prizes totaling over $500 in retail value,
it was a great way to keep the patient riders occupied as the results
were sorted by category and ranked by time.
Complete results for all 31 categories
were posted less than 1 hour after the last rider finished.
Feedback from riders has been very positive;
however the team is always looking for ways to improve the event.
If you have any suggestions please email Brian Carlson at bcarlson4
@ wi.rr.com or Dave Eckel at pedalfastnow @ yahoo.com.
39th
Edition Le Tour de l’Abitibi July 16-22, 2007
The Tour de l’Abitibi
is the largest international stage races for junior men 17-18 in
North America. The UCI sanctioned event consists of a prologue and
8 stages. The event is one of nine World Cup events for juniors
on the UCI race calendar where teams from all over the world compete.
This is a stage race based on time and riders must finish within
the time cut to continue on to the next stage. There were 26 teams
consisting of 6 riders each in this year’s tour.

Casey drove the team from Road Nationals
in Seven Springs, PA to Val-d’Or, Quebec in the rental van.
Joe and I drove the UCI legal ISCorp wagon from Milwaukee, WI to
Val-d’Or. Casey and the athletes arrived within an hour of
Joe and me. Along the way, Ben Sharp (USAC Junior Programs Manager)
called me on my cell phone to inform me that Joe Kukolla would be
riding for the US National Cycling Team at l’Abitibi and that
he got a rider to replace Joe. Brett Jacoby from Wind Gap, PA would
be Joe’s replacement. We were tight on room in the rental
van so USAC transported several of our bikes and luggage while we
transported all the athletes including Joe and Brett.
During the week, we had our highs and
lows associated with international stage racing. Alex got a tenth
place in the prologue consisting of 400 m street sprints which got
us a 9th position in the caravan for the first road stage. Car order
in the caravan is not based on team overall classification but rather
individual GC. In the first road stage we lost a lot of time by
losing three riders in the last few miles of the stage. John Caldwell
and Alex Wieseler fell off the back and Dave Hackworthy was chasing
after a crash and got caught up in the caravan and missed the final
turn to the finish and had to turn around and lost some time. After
the first road stage we went from a great caravan position to one
near the rear for the rest of the week.
Stage 2 was the TTT and ISCorp finished
14th out of 26 teams.
Brett Jacoby had a great finish in Amos
for stage 5. Stage 5 was a new criterium course that consisted of
a grueling climb that had riders falling off the back each lap.
Brett got into a late break away group of 13 riders and finished
7th in the stage. Brett fit in really well with everyone on the
team.
The overall winner of the tour was Taylor
Phinney riding for US National who is the son of Davis Phinney and
Connie Carpenter. Taylor won the overall brown jersey and the blue
jersey for the best 17 year old rider.
William Garneau (Quebec) finished 24th
overall. William Garneau is the son of Louis Garneau and Louis was
in attendance during all the stages usually riding his pink Garneau
bike in a full pink Garneau race kit.
This was my 5th tour l’Abitibi
as a coach and this was by far the safest tour to date. Three out
of my five tour teams have had at least one totaled bicycle. This
year I did not see a totaled bicycle from any team. We had a few
crashes but our riders were always able to remount their bikes and
keep rolling. We only had a few flat tires this year as well. The
fewer crashes are most likely due to the higher race speeds from
higher quality field of athletes this year.
Our top rider was Weston Luzadder and
he is only 17 so he should be ready to have a stellar tour next
year now that he has one tour under his belt. Overall all this was
one of the best groups of athletes to work with.
Joe Kukolla and Brett Jacoby will be
leaving July 31st for Europe where they will both be racing for
the US National Team.

KENOSHA
MAYOR'S CUP RACE RESCHEDULED
Kenosha,
WI – The Mayor's Cup Points Race, the first of three
premier races throughout the summer Kenosha track racing season,
has been rescheduled to Tuesday, July 10th. It was originally scheduled
for next week July 3rd. However, due to its proximity to the July
4th Holiday, the Kenosha Velodrome Association has elected to swap
the schedules for the next two weeks. Instead, the schedule for
10 July, which includes the Danish and Miss-n-Out, will run next
week.
The Mayor's Cup is a 75-lap points race,
an event that tests both stamina and speed as riders earn points
every 5th lap. It is supported by the Kenosha Mayor's office and
features a traveling trophy engraved with names of all the past
top finishers. Former winners include Rick Dregne, Robbie Ventura,
Jonas Carney, and Jeff Senn.
Other premier Tuesday night races are
the Bob Pfarr Classic on July 17th (a brutal 150-lap points race
that coincides with Superweek and always draws several out-of-town
Pros) and the Kenosha News Trophy on July 31st (a junior-only points
race also featuring a traveling trophy).
There's lots of fast, racing action
left this summer at the Kenosha bowl, including several Keiren and
Madison events. Come on down and check it out—racing runs
7-10pm every Tuesday Night until the end of August. Admission is
free! Contact Nick Holbus (manager@teambeansandbarley.com) for more
information.
Reward
Offered for Anonymous Return of Stolen Wheels
A
set of Hed Stinger 60 wheels with a Powertap 2.4 hub and tufo tires
was stolen from the Whitewater Crit wheel pit on Saturday during
the mens cat 3 race. The owner would very much like to get these
wheels back. If you have these wheels or know who has them, please
return them to Atkins Racing in Verona, Madison (no questions asked)
or send an email (anonymous if you need to) to lniles@saris.com.
A generous reward is being offered for the return of the wheels.
It’s very unfortunate that someone could justify taking something
that belong to a fellow rider so if you have a conscience at all,
do the right thing and return the wheels.
Giro
d’Grafton Hits High Note
I’m
not sure any of us expected the scene we encountered when we pulled
into Grafton for the inaugural Giro d’Grafton. Crowds and
crowds of people, lining each side of the street, a band playing,
kids everywhere and in the background, the expert tenor voice of
an announcer who knew his sport. All on an outstanding, challenging
course in a lovely town. Welcome to a new born classic race.
The race was hosted by the IS Corp/Nova
Cycle Sport club and kudos to them and to race directors Michael
Martens and Billy Ochowicz for marshaling the forces necessary to
pull off this event. Rider after rider could be heard saying “this
is awesome!” and the spectators seemed to think the same thing.
Any event of this caliber takes exquisite
coordination and support. Grafton State Bank was the title sponsor
and proud they should be of the show they helped produce. Time Warner
Road Runners services sponsored the big wheel race and is also running
a 30 minute show about the race on the Time Warner Sports network
this summer. Grafton is a town known for the blues and the Grafton
Blues association booked the bands “Loose Change" (also
happens to be Grafton State Bank President Jeff Larson’s band!)/the
Greg Koch/Steve Kohn/Sue Dabaco and Wise Fools from Chicago. Turns
out Grafton has blues history with plenty of famous artists having
recorded there in the 1920s at the former Paramount Records studio.
Speaking of Paramount , the restaurant
that bears its name was also a sponsor, and you can check them out
at theparamountrestaurant.com.
While it wasn’t open yet, the new coffee shop gave us samples
of coffee, and it happened to be right next to a new wine bar and
a bike shop. Someone was doing their demographic homework: coffee,
wine and bikes?? You just pegged the cyclist, who also happens to
be a tad on the over-educated side, driven, successful and fun loving.
We are a great demographic!
Good job to Mr. Martens, Mr. Ochowicz,
and IS Corp, and a special thanks to Jeff Littman and Wisc. Health
& Fitness. We’re already looking forward to next year.

Backroads
TT and State Road Race Photos
Photographer
Len Bucher took a lot of photos of the Backroads TT and State
Road Race. You can check out the photos here http://www.pictage.com/321731
and here: http://www.pictage.com/321729.
It's
worth noting that the rider wearing the stars and stripes of the
national champion in the Back Roads TT is WCA's president Gordy
Paulson who, fittingly, not only won his age group (55) but had
the fastest time of the day. Way to inspire, Gordy! I want to be
like you when I grow up. Good job to you and to the Beans & Barley
team for putting on a great race.
The
2007 Hampshire Cycle Club Matt Wittig Memorial Race
The 2007 Hampshire Cycle Club Matt Wittig
Memorial Race took place on May 12th at Waukesha County's Muskego
Park. The over 300 racers enjoyed great weather throughout the entire
day. This race location has become popular with racers as a relatively
central race location between Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago in
addition to being a scenic place for having bike races.
Mrs. Wittig stayed throughout the day
to cheer on the racers in most all the categories and per tradition
now presented the Matt Wittig Memorial race trophy to the winner
of the Category 3 race. This year, Jerry Long with Homegrown Racing
won the race trophy. The race winner keeps the trophy permanently.
In addition, the Rainbow Jersey bike shop in Shorewood houses a
duplicate trophy with the names of previous years' winners engraved
on it.

Matt began racing with Hamphire Cycle
Club as a junior while still in high school at Homestead High School
in Mequon. He went on to race at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
and eventually switched over to race for IS Corp. Matt had ambition
to race at the very highest levels of racing. All those who knew
Matt remember his enthusiasm for the sport and his honest and genuine
personality.
On the morning of race day this year,
the Wittig family planted a tree in Matt's memory at Muskego Park.
This tree will grow over time and provide a continual reminder of
Matt's strength and determination - two traits which cyclists need
more of than just about anything else!
Thanks to all those who raced. We hope
to see you again next year!
